So, the wife and I were walking the ranch this weekend (mostly to let our Vizsla and German Shorthair stretch their legs) and were lucky enough to stumble upon this beautiful little fawn. Even though I've seen quite a few of them by now, I can't help but still be in awe. Anyway, I know it isn't car related but I thought some of you may enjoy seeing one of nature's great gifts.

Now is not the time to wonder what venison tastes like, is it?

I got stuck out in the woods on my mountain bike with a flat tire. while I was sitting there trying to patch the tube, a deer snuck up behind me within inches. I thought I heard something fall out of my backpack so i looked behind me and we were nose to nose. Within a second it was gone. Even tho it was only a deer it still scared the carp out of me.

Also, what did you use to take the picture? This doesn't seem like a phone camera to me...

We had a little one walk right up to our porch last year.

Great story. I guess it must have smelled something that it like in your backpack. Haha.

I used our Canon camera (I can get you the exact model if you want). My wife and I have learned from our many walks on the ranch that a good camera is a necessary item.

Don't get too complacent about it being "only a deer." A frightened deer is a dangerous critter. Beautiful, but physically tough and capable.

Oh wow. Great photos. Also, I love its expression in the first photo.

No that's ok, I just wanted to know that it wasn't a phone camera, thanks. A good camera is a great thing to have. Enjoy your lovely walks!

hell of a lot better than some of the other things i've seen from a distance. but what ur saying is very true. i'm sure a kick to the face would leave quite a hoof mark. I came across a moose once. we stayed wayyyyy away from that dude.

Awwwwwwwww...

One small correction, though, it's "vizsla", not "viszla".

Kinja'd!!!

We were visited by a surprisingly friendly young deer during a camping trip a few years back. The scouts (and a scout's mom) were more afraid of the deer than it was of us. A few minutes in and it even (cautiously) let us pet it.

Huh. Very interesting.

All of ours are scared of us because we hunt them during deer season.

There's a deer season here too, which made it so odd. I guess this one either had a strong sense of curiosity or a poor sense of self preservation. Either way it had me worried about it's long term survival.

Well she does look skinny so maybe no one will shot her.

Beautiful.

We had both a vizsla and a German shorthair as well. Fantastic dogs.

Jimi was a sweet boy (lost too soon, at 9 to cancer)

Kinja'd!!!

Emma was a lover, sometimes too smart for her own good (made it to 13)

Kinja'd!!!

Now we have a Brittany (Bullseye) and a little Lab mix (Little Brown Dog or Brownie - don't blame me, he was my brother's dog first - a stray they took in). They're great with the kids, even with our little James tugging on them from time to time.

Thank you and yours are gorgeous as well. Sorry to hear that they are no longer with you. I agree some of the best dogs I've ever owned.

Sally and Lucy are my 3rd Vizsla and GSP pair and my first one in quite a while. I actually grew up on a farm, so having hunting dogs around was just normal. However, as I grew up, started my own businesses, and lived in big cities, I just didn't have the space or time to keep these wonderful but very hyper breeds occupied. Luckily, now that I'm semi-retired, I finally have an adequate amount of time to enjoy them fully once again.

Your two new ones sound like a great pair, especially since they are great with the kids.

They definitely need the room to roam, explore and stretch their legs. Their endurance is truly amazing. I look forward to having another of each some day down the line.

Thankfully, our home is just north of a big soccer complex (which is just north of the Arkansas river), so we have access to the wide open spaces they need. The kids love taking long treks with Bullseye and Brown, but I'll admit it doesn't happen as regularly as I'd like.

Do you generally prefer to own females instead of males, or is that just how it worked out for you this time?

Well if you do get more of them, I hope they are as good to you as Jimi and Emma were.

Ah well having adequate space for them definitely helps.

I generally prefer to own females. From my experience, they mind much better and are easier to train due to the fact that they aren't as stubborn. However, this has just been my experience. Both sexes are wonderful.
